City comes alive for parade Thousands of people lined the streets of Nelson’s central business district on Friday night for the annual masked parade. The spectacular parade was themed “world of books” this year and entrants went from Lord of the Rings to Willy Wonka to Where’s Wally. More than 3500 took part in the parade with an estimated 20,000 watching from footpaths and car parks. The supreme winner was Nayland Primary School. Brittany Spencer A fire that ripped through a caravan on Saturday night, killing the sole person inside, was lucky not to cause more damage, says the manager of the caravan park. The fire started at about 8pm and “went up like a rocket”, according to Richmond fire chief Ralph Lonsdale. Black smoke was seen throughout Richmond and residents have said it could be smelt three kilometres away. Police and fire investigators were still at the scene on Monday but they have confirmed that a body was located in the caravan and a post mortem examination was expected to be completed yesterday. Police expect it will be some time before formal identification is complete. Waimea Club managers Jan Phipps and Mike Carter say they were deeply shocked at the fire that they labelled a tragedy. Schools locked down: Several Nelson schools were in lock down in the wake of the police response to a fight in which a firearm was presented. Neighbours reported seeing four to five Armed Offenders Squad officers and two police dogs storm into a Brunner St home. Police communications manager Barbara Dunn says the police reacted to reports of a fight and placed road blocks around Bishopdale. “We were told a firearm was presented so we’ve sent in our Armed Offenders Squad. Three men were taken into custody but the call out forced police to cordon off Brunner, Motueka and Tukuka Sts, along with Nelson College, Hampden St School, Nelson Hospital and several preschools in the area.

Growth from tourists and food Locally Owned and Operated

Tourism and food are the two industries that can provide the most economic growth to Nelson and Tasman, according to a new government report, but only confirms what people in those industries already knew. Economic development minister Steven Joyce released the 2015 Regional Economic Activity Report last week, which highlights areas of growth and opportunity in every region of New Zealand. For both Nelson and Tasman it was

tourism and food that were seen as the major industries that could see growth. The report said Nelson’s economy is diverse, with a high proportion of its employment in the health care and social assistance, retails and professional, scientific and technical services sectors Tasman is the most rural of New Zealand’s regions, with much of its economy based around primary production. Around 14 per cent of its employment is in horticulture, compared with 1.5 per cent

in the rest of the country. Forestry is also a significant contributor to regional GDP, with both forestry and horticulture contributing around $430 million to the regional economy in 2012. “The report identifies tourism as one of the sectors where further development will help lift growth in the region. Further development of the cruise ship market and the promotion of Nelson as a premier food and beverage region will be key. Tourism will also be helped by Jetstar’s recent

announcement that it will operate to Auckland and Wellington from the region. “Nelson airport is the fourth busiest commercial airport in New Zealand and the city provides international connectivity for the surrounding wine, pip fruit, seafood and forestry industries.” On Tasman, he says it is home to three national parks – Abel Tasman, Kahurangi and Nelson Lakes, and the report identifies opportunities for Tasman to further develop the tourism sector.

Teddies from all over Nelson filled Founders Heritage Park on Saturday morning for a ‘Teddies Day Out.’ Children and their teddies of all shapes and sizes enjoyed the morning of free ‘teddy’ themed activities, including teddy songs, crafts, balloon animals and story-time sessions hosted by the Nelson Public Library. The event was part of the Nelson Arts Festival, and followed a teddies-only sleepover at the Elma Turner Library on Friday night. Attendees to both events were also treated to a free ticket to take their teddies for a train ride at Founders.

Security tags causing problems Kate Russell

Nelsonians have been setting off shop door alarms more often lately – but they’re not shop lifting – it’s because of a new electronic security tag scheme that has been employed by an iconic Kiwi company. Customers who buy clothing from The Warehouse may have noticed new security tags attached to their garments. But the tags, which are deactivated - but not removed - upon purchase, have been

causing problems in other shops by setting of their door security alarms. The problem has been most persistent at Kmart Richmond. People have been buying clothes that contain the tags at the The Warehouse, which is right next door, and then come in and set off the Kmart door alarms. A spokesperson from Kmart Richmond says that it’s happening “all the time” and it usually gives their customers a bit of a fright. “We have to tell customers that it’s just the

The Warehouse’s website says that clothing over $15 and footwear over $20 are now supposed to have an electronic tag attached at source by the manufacturer.

Jon Toogood, the lead singer of Shihad, visited Tahunanui School last week to lend an inspiring hand to the local school band. The visit was part of a mentoring program set up by the New Zealand Music Commission which sees Jon and other musicians visiting schools across New Zealand. Jon spent the morning working with the school band – Tahunanui Tunes on their original song titled ‘Me & You,’ as well as developing their ideas for a school song. The band, fresh from performing at BandQuest, is made up of ten students and ranges from xylophones to bongo drums and everything in between.

Jon also met with next year’s band, gave the school advice for their music department and performed several songs for the senior syndicate. Tahunanui School’s music teacher Kate Sara applied for the mentoring. “I can’t believe we got it, it’s such a big opportunity.” Kate says the students were so excited to meet Jon and share their music. “They are musicians, they’re writing their own music, they’re producing their own music and now they’re sharing it with musicians, so that’s very cool.” For video of this story, visit

Kate Russell Saxton Stadium will come alive with art this Labour weekend, as the fourth annual Art Expo Nelson gets ready for its biggest show yet. 170 artists, including 50 from outside the Nelson and Tasman region, will showcase a range of unique and affordable art over the three-day expo, ranging from painters, printmakers, sculptors, photographers, ceramicists, jewellers and more. Project manager Nic Foster, says that this is the first year they have opened

up the expo to artists from the rest of New Zealand, and he has been pleased with the positive response. “Having out of town artists will really freshen up the show, and it will also give locals a chance to see some new artists, which is great,” he says. “We’ve got a great community of artists in the top of the South matched only by great art lovers. Like previous years, we expect to see lots of people over the weekend enjoying the art, meeting the artists and staying for a few hours to really soak up the atmosphere. “Nelsonians should stay local this long

weekend – there are heaps of free things on and it’s a great opportunity to really enjoy our city.” Local artist Brian Strong has been in the expo every year since its inception, and says it’s a really beneficial way to promote his work. He also says it’s good that the expo has been tied in with the Nelson arts festival this year. Art Expo Nelson will be held at Saxton Stadium from Saturday 24 October – Monday 26 October from 10am. A follow-up to a popular Nelson street art book is set to be released this week, but this time it has captured the Tasman district too. Nelson and Tasman Street Art by Amanda Sears is a “new and improved” version of her successful 2014 book and will feature an extensive visual collection of over 70 murals from Nelson to Motueka. It will be released as an A5 landscape book, pocket book, 2016 calendar, and digital book. “I did last year's book while studying design at NMIT, and it did really well, but this year I thought I’d do an expanded version - and I'm so proud of it," says Amanda. Alongside the books and calendar, Amanda will also be launching a website, which she will add new murals to as they pop up around the region. Amanda has completed every aspect of the book herself (minus the printing), including the photography, research gathering, graphic design, and the cover art. It's taken her about seven months from

start to finish, which she has fitted around her full-time job. Amanda says its too hard to pick a favourite mural out of the book. “Every time a new mural comes out, I say its my favourite, but I love them all – there are some pretty stunning ones," she says. "They are a fantastic way to beautify the area - I would love to have my own mural in Nelson one day." The book will be revealed at a launch party at Pocket Park on Bridge St this Thursday, October 22, from 6-9pm, along with music from local singer/songwriter Bryce Wastney and food from Streat Kitchen. Copies of the books or calendar will be available to buy at the launch, and there will also be a live painting by Monique Richards that will later be sold to raise money for a local community art organisation. The books and calendar will also be available to buy from her website www.thestreetartbook.co.nz from Thursday, and from selected stores later in the month.

National Geocaching Challenge The National Geocaching Challenge is great motivation to go exploring outdoors. Geocaching is a modern day hide-and-seek adventure using a free mobile app and GPS coordinates to find ‘caches’ (containers) in the great outdoors.

JPs recognised for long service

Eighteen of the 190 Justices of the Peace in Nelson and Tasman are being recognised for their long service this year, with eight of them receiving their 30 year long service certificates on Sunday. JPs receive awards after 30, 50 and 60 years of service to the community and this year 18 members of the Nelson Tasman Justices of the Peace Association will be honoured for 30 years of service. Association president Terry Byrne says eight of their JPs received their certificates at the association’s 76th annual general meeting St John’s Anglican Church Hall in Motueka on Sunday afternoon, with the remaining 10 receiving them either at earlier functions or at future events. “Several members have actually served for longer than 40 years,” Terry says. “Collectively, the 18 Justices represent over 550 years of

community service. “This is a remarkable achievement when it is considered that when they took the oath of office they were expected to make themselves readily available to serve the public and they continue to do so today. “Justices of the Peace have been serving New Zealand for over 200 years and they are drawn from a wide cross-section of the community and represent the ethnic diversity of the community

in which they reside and work.” Terry says Justices of the Peace are a dedicated group of people who commit themselves to carrying out statutory, judicial and ministerial functions in the administration of documentation and justice in New Zealand. The role is not seen as an honour, but they have a duty to be true servants of justice in the community. “During the last year, our Justices have signed over 6000

documents,” he says. “The association provides two service desks every Saturday morning from 10am to midday, at the Nelson Library and the Richmond Mall. “There is also a service desk at Elevation Cafe, Motueka on the first and third Saturdays of the month. When added together with those visiting private homes, Justices of the Peace are indeed providing an invaluable community service.” The Justices who were a w a r d e d long-s er vice certificates on

Editorial: Art events are worth the money Spring is already a pretty good time to be in Nelson. The sun, the flowers, the cycle trails, parks, eating al fresco, beer, wine, the Makos, school galas… Ok, so it’s a pretty long list, but right at the top of it is the arts festival, and I think it’s public money well spent. Each year, the Nelson Arts Festival is held in October and it’s always good. But this year it feels better, and it’s only a few days in. This week’s edition of Nelson Weekly highlights how much is happening and while not all of it is strictly a part of the festival, together it gives our region something special each Spring.

Friday night’s masked parade was the best for several years, in my opinion. The effort and imagination in the masks was first-rate and the world of books theme was much better than some other years – it gave the entrants more to work with. The event is one of the best our region has. The carnivale that follows the masked parade is always fun. It’s rare that our city centre has such a buzz. It was there during the Rugby World Cup and to a lesser extent on New Year’s Eve. But the carnavale is the one night each year that the centre of town goes off and it’s a great thing to be a part of. And then there are the shows, concerts

But it isn’t just the festival. This year, the Nelson Art Expo has been moved from its mid-winter time-slot to next weekend creating even more excitement around the festival for art-lovers. Another story that features in this week’s Weekly is the release of a book about street

art in the region – which is a success in itself. Street Art is a wonderful way for us as a city to show our creativity and uniqueness. I’ll be the first to admit I’m no art connoisseur and there is merit in questioning the council for its spending on community events, things that aren’t core services. But how could you not fall in love with art in Nelson at the moment? Similar to the council’s financial support of hosting international cricket games, it’s money well spent and it gives our region something to be truly proud of. So get out and enjoy it while you can.

Stoke service station closed for upgrade The Z Energy service station in Stoke will be closed for four months while it undergoes a $2 million upgrade. Z Energy communications manager Jonathan Hill says the service station had passed its useby date and will undergo a complete rebuild with new underground tanks, pumps and buildings. Access into the site will also be made easier. The 666 Main Rd Stoke site has been cordoned off while the upgrade is completed. Jonathan says the new-look service station will be reopened early next year.

Brook dealings a concern: Nelson Council’s dealings with the Brook Community are concerning, demonstrating a contempt for democracy. Once again, Council is tap dancing around statutory requirements. It is time it was challenged and held to account, as should have happened in many previous years, when, for example, it blatantly disregarded its own noise laws. Council abuses the term 'technical', employing it as in "don't worry your pretty little head" and "Just sign here. I never read the small print myself ". A proposed change of land status is no technicality! No matter how much Council officers would like to conceal their chicanery, the cat is out of the bag and yeowling springtime. Sixty years of marriage started with a dance Andrew Board

It was a typical summer Saturday night on the Waimea Plains in the early 1950s when Colin met Elviene. It was at a dance in an old wool shed on Lansdown Rd in Appleby and three Suburban buses were parked outside after bringing in people from all over the district. The music was rocking. Colin can’t remember what drew him to the woman who would become his wife but Elviene helped him fill in the gaps: “I must have been so pretty, you see.” Four kids, nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren later, Colin and Elviene Brown will celebrate 60 years of marriage tomorrow. They say over the course of their marriage there have been very few disputes and Elviene reckons it can be traced right back to that first night when Colin chose to dance with her and not one of her sisters. “All of my sisters got stroppy quick, I was the placid one of the lot,” she jokes. “That’s probably it.”

They were both around 19 years old when they met that night. Elviene’s family owned a mixed farm in Appleby where Seifrieds now grow grapes and Colin left school at 14 to become a mechanic where the Stoke Mall now sits. When they met he was working at a garage on Three Brothers Corner, where Jacks Tyres is now. After several years of courting, the couple were married at the All Saints Church on Vanguard St in Nelson on October 22, 1955. Before they were married, work had started on what would be their family home on Talbot St, Richmond, which is now two doors down from the entrance to Couplands in the Kmart complex. The house has been the central point for the family ever since. Their children Murray, Christine, Diane and Maureen were “well occupied” and the home was a meeting place for the neighbourhood. Elviene says they were good kids.

Goodness, I’d hate to have kids today, hells bells,” says Elviene. “All our grandkids are good too, you never know what they’ve tried but they’re not druggies, they haven’t been in court.” They say their marriage has been solid and Elviene says she can’t remember any major arguments. “We have a good marriage and get on together. We discuss things.

We may have got a bit bored with each other sometimes but you just go on with it. We were pretty compatible, I think that’s the secret,” she says. Asked why they think why some marriages don’t seem to last as long these days, Elviene has no answer. “I don’t know what the hell they do. You’ve to talk to each other, discuss it and not get uptight and not throw things at each other, I think people get that

kind of carry on from television.” But they have had their challenges. Around 15 years ago Elviene had a major operation on her eye and several weeks later Colin had major heart surgery. But they’ve had many more good times than bad. Overseas trips, a successful mechanic business for 40 years and, of course, the family. And they still share hobbies, they both attend country music singa-longs, where he’s “the oldest bugger singing”. Elviene says, as the town of Richmond has grown around them they’ve had the odd offer on the house, but they’ve never thought of moving. “We’re silly if we shift now. We’ve liked it all this time so why not see the rest of the time out, no matter what.” The pair will celebrate their milestone on Saturday night with their family, who are coming from around New Zealand for the anniversary. Elviene says it will be good to see her family together and that the time has flown. “Sixty years has gone pretty quick. I still remember the wedding day, I can’t believe it’s been that long.”

It’s a busy time of year at the Richmond Mall. There are a few construction projects that will be finishing up in the next few months or so and there’s been plenty happening on the promotion front, with almost $20,000 given away in vouchers. Here’s a quick overview of what’s happening at Richmond Mall this month: • Our promotion to give a $10 voucher to every customer who spent $100 or more in any store [excluding supermarkets] was a massive success. We gave away $18,000 in $10 vouchers. You loved it, and to be honest, it was a bit more than we expected to give away. However, we are very pleased with the outcome and it is reflecting in the stores’ turnovers. • We also gave a $500 voucher to Vicky McLean and another to Karen Wright. Both were winners of our Try-it-on-and -win promotion. • Construction-wise we have plenty on the go. At the Paper Plus entrance you may have noticed that we’re doing work to the Pak n Save loading bay. This will tidy up the area so you won’t have to look into skips and pallets. That project is due to be finished by the end of October and then we’ll get about 30 car parks back. • The Pak n Save extension on the other side of the mall is on track and due to be finished by mid-November. • A reminder that the mall is the gathering point for NZ Anthem One Voice on Sunday 25 October 2015 at 12 noon. “Together let’s sing our National Anthem” • The current painted walkway will be replaced with a permanent raised walkway and an additional walkway towards Fresh Choice. This will make the area safer for children and prevent cars from driving across. This work will start early November with an expected completion date before Christmas. • Richmond Mall is also welcoming a new tenant into the mall this month. Phone Zone will occupy space in the common area in between Postie and Farmers. • Finally, thank you to all the kids who took part in our pizza-making promotion during the school holidays. We had around 100 kids every day of the holidays, it was great to have so many enjoying the mall on their holidays. Push for more neighbourhood support groups Nelson neighbourhoods are being invited to get together and form Neighbourhood Support groups, and win a BBQ meat pack in the process. Neighbourhood Support Nelson is offering a $25 meat pack, supplied by Pestell’s Rai Bacon Company, to one lucky group that is initiated by the end of November. Neighbourhood Support Nelson co-ordinator Karen Clark says forming a group was a great way of getting to know neighbours and making the neighbourhood a safer and friendlier place to live in. Neighbourhood Support groups encouraged neighbours to look out for each other and keep an eye on each other’s properties, and make their homes and the neighbourhood more secure. They also encouraged neighbourhoods to prepare for natural disasters such as earthquakes, she says. Groups were given information on home security, crime prevention and emergency

A small Nelson business with a big heart is in need of some support to keep a much needed community space open. Ecomoon Boutique is an ecofriendly baby goods and family store on Bridge St, and for the past 18 months they have offered a community room at the back of their shop as a central drop-in spot for Nelson families, and for community groups to use. But, they cannot keep funding the room at their cost. The room has proved to be very popular, with 30 – 50 families using it each week; from parents who need somewhere warm and dry to breastfeed, to heat up bottles, change a nappy, or even to sit down and have a cuppa and catch their breath. It is also used free of charge by community groups, such as Baby Wearing Nelson, to hold support meetings. Owner Prue Fothergill, who also runs antenatal classes from the space, says that even with a koha donation box, the costs of running the room are becoming unmanageable for them. The room eats up one-third of their lease, and throughout the winter months the power bill is high. Prue says that if the room is to stay open, they need more

Photo: Kate Russell. donations, or sponsorship from other local businesses. “We are asking for local Nelson businesses, services and groups to sponsor the community room to keep this service going for what has turned out to be a much-needed space for local families, and visitors too.” Prue says every dollar counts, and in return they can offer a promotion within the community room and in their newsletters, and a space in their Facebook fundraising album. “We know this room is needed, we know families are using it, and we know they are grateful

for it” she says. “As parents ourselves we have been there, trying to feed a baby with a toddler running off, and in Nelson there aren’t any public parent rooms that offer this space. He enlisted for service during World War One from Wakefield, New Zealand and joined the Canterbury Infantry Battalion. He embarked on 24 September 1914 from Lyttelton, Canterbury, New Zealand for Wellington, New Zealand. From Wellington he joined the Main Body and embarked on 16 October 1914 for Egypt. Steer served for one year and one hundred and ninety-one days in Egypt and Gallipoli. He was discharged on 24 Private Cyril Roy Steer. Nelson February 1916. Steer later died in Provincial Museum, Tyree Studio Collection: 86934 Levin on 26 February 1965.

Forestry workers get fire training Simon Bloomberg

A fire-fighting training day for forestry contractors from around Nelson and Tasman had an extra edge to it with the dry, windy conditions ramping up the fire danger in the region’s forests. The Waimea Rural Fire Authority put about 50 silviculture workers through their paces at Eves Valley last Friday to sharpen up their fire fighting skills leading into summer. Crews learned a range of fire-fighting techniques using portable pumps and dams, and practised filling up monsoon buckets slung under a hovering helicopter flown by Helicharters Nelson. “We hold these training days for the contractors every year, but it could be even more important this year,” deputy principal rural fire officer Nathan Freeman says. “It’s getting very dry out there and we are monitoring the situation very closely.” Nathan says the forestry crews play a big role in fighting forest fires and needed to “validate” their skills every two years as part of their training requirements. The crews provide valuable support for the region’s volunteer rural fire forces and were often an initial response to fires because they worked in the forests. “If there is a large fire we call these guys in to help us out,” Nathan says. “They provide

Photo: Simon Bloomberg. support and back-up and are really valuable because they know the land - it’s their normal working environment.” Nelson Forest Managers crew member Matt Stuart says the training day, which was a requirement for their national certificates, was important for improving their fire-fighting skills. “We often get called out to fires so we need

to enhance our understanding of firefighting,” Matt says. “We have some guys who have been in forestry for years and are very experienced, but we also have new guys who need to get up to speed.” Principal rural fire officer Ian Reade says the fire danger was still escalating and they had already attended a number of “incidents” this season. ‘Tis the season for garden trails With spring now in full bloom, garden trails have been keeping Nelson’s green-thumbs busier than ever. On Saturday, the Nelson north garden trail, which is a fundraiser for the Atawhai Community Church, attracted well over 100 people to seven gardens in the Marybank to Hira area. Organiser Adrienne Thomas says they had a wonderful turnout, and they already have new gardens being offered for next year’s trail. On Sunday, the Ruby Coast art and garden trail hosted 13 gardens from Mapua to Kina. Local sculptors and artists joined in, too, displaying their work in the wide variety of gardens that

were on offer. Organiser Janet Taylor from the Mapua Woman’s Recreation Group, says the trail was a “real team effort,” and all the money raised will go to the Cancer Society. Still to come this weekend is the Motueka garden trail – the annual fundraiser for the Motueka District Toy Library. Twenty gardens will be on offer over the popular two-day trail, including a mix of big country gardens in Riwaka, the Moutere and Tasman as well as smaller gardens in the Motueka township. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased from Founders Brewery and Cafe in Nelson, and McGlashens Pharmacy in Richmond.

Nelson teacher could represent Japan at Olympics

Multi-talented Nelson sportswoman Jess Drummond has already represented New Zealand in touch and next weekend she will be making her international sevens debut in Australia - for Japan. Jess, 23, who has been a member of the New Zealand touch team since 2010, has also represented Tasman and Canterbury at sevens and played for the Canterbury Tactix under-23 netball team. Earlier this year, she played for New Zealand at the Touch World Cup in Australia and this week she heads back across the Tasman to play for Japan in the Central Coast Sevens in Kanwai, New South Wales. "It will be hard, but I have been training for sevens for the last two months and I played rugby tens for Waimea this season, so I should be fine." The Central Coast Sevens will be an ideal lead-up to her next assignment, the Super Series in Taupo the following weekend. She is one of 60 players selected for the series which is effectively a trial for the New Zealand squad. Although Jess is clearly in the frame for national honours, she knows the competition is hotter than ever now that sevens will be at the Rio Olympics. "It's my second year playing sevens and I've represented Tasman and Canterbury and now I'm going to the Super Series, so that's made me realise I can compete at that level. But I'll have to take the next step up because there are so many good players around, especially with touch players and even netballers switching to sevens to try and get to Rio."

Nelson powerlifter Michelle Welsh isn’t just heading to Canada to compete – she wants a medal. And given her history of achieving her goals, it’d be brave to bet against Michelle coming home with a bit of precious metal from the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships in Vancouver. Michelle only began powerlifting two years ago after searching through a list of sports on a South Island Masters Games brochure. Her rugby days were gone and she was looking for a new sport. Since then she’s won a novice powerlifting competition, dropped 17kg, represented New Zealand at an Asia/Oceania competition and now has her eyes firm-

ly set on a the dais in Vancouver next month. “I’ve got some numbers that I want to hit and I want to get on the podium. My totals at nationals is currently within the top three and I can beat that now, so I’m hopeful of being the top three.” Michelle’s trainer Jason Hylkema says her success so far is because she’s willing to put in the work. “It’s always going to come down to hard work. You do come across talent but someone who works hard will always win and Michelle works really hard, so that’s where the results are coming from.” Michelle will compete in the open class in the 84kg category. Her combined totals from a dead lift, bench press and squat will be compared with others in her class to decide the winner.

New Zealand is sending eight men and seven women in each category and Michelle is the only Nelsonian who made the team. She says making the team was a huge rush of excitement after working towards it since the start of the year. A journey that included losing 17kg but maintaining her strength. “I’ve had a pretty exciting week really. It’s been my goal right from the start of the year to drop a weight class and make the team to go to Vancouver.” Michelle is raising money to make the competition and has set up a givealittle page. Top local trial riders off to nationals Nelson's top moto trial riding family is expecting some seriously tough terrain, and even tougher competition, when it heads north this weekend for the national championships in Taranaki. Father Stephen Oliver and his sons Pete and Nicholas have been in good form, winning their respective classes in the three-round South Island champs which concluded in Dunedin earlier this month. Stephen, 55, won his eighth, and sixth consecutive, masters title, Nicholas, 26, won the pro class while Peter, 24, took out the A grade champs. However, Stephen says they will need to change up a couple of gears if they

are to be competitive at the nationals, especially in the pro class where New Zealand's top internationals Jake Whitaker and John Haynes will be riding. A seven-time national champion, Jake will be especially hard to beat and Stephen says Nicholas will need to ride well just to make the podium. The South Island riders will also have to contend with the "very different and difficult terrain" on the Taranaki courses which typically have lots of native bush and tree roots. Riders are required to negotiate the extreme courses and obstacles without falling off or touching their feet on the ground - they receive penalties for
